Napoleon I. Consulate (1799-1804). Passage of St. Bernard bronzed pewter uniface Medal L'An VIII (1800) AU, cf. Bramsen 35. By Bertrand Andrieu. 67mm. Commemorative of Napoleon's crossing of the Alps in May 1800. Reminiscent of the famous equestrian portrait by Jacques-Louis David, this dynamically illustrated medal shows Napoleon with his hand full of thunderbolts astride his horse, pressing forward across the rocky landscape of the Alps. With crisp detail and an attractive copper-steel toning, housed in a contemporary green leather case. Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822), owned a shop in Paris from which he sold uniface copies of his medals and it is possible that this example originated in that boutique.
