Napoleon I. First Empire (1804-14). Vienna Capitulation bronze commemorative Medal 1805 AU, Milan mint, Bramsen-444. By L. Manfredini. 42mm. Struck to celebrate the taking of Vienna. Intriguingly, Napoleon here has seemingly departed from his usual Roman symbolism, choosing to instead represent himself in a Greco style, appearing as Alexander the Great with a Corinthian helmet. Originally darkly silvered, this has begun to give way in places to the smooth brown of the bronze beneath, commensurate with grading. An especially interesting and attractive neo-Classical design, and an overall desirable piece.
