Napoleon I. First Empire (1804-14). Battle of Jena Medal Reverse Hub Trial 1806, cf. Bramsen-539, by Manfredini. 40mm. A curious piece, produced in copper over pewter and bearing the reverse design of Napoleon's Battle of Jena medal in incuse, its opposite side numbered '69'. Clearly trial number 69 was a failure, as the incuse design of this piece is not of a sufficient depth to effectively strike new medals; however it remains visually appealing, the copper coating showing considerable residual luster. Certainly scarce and possibly unique, and an interesting insight into the production of Napoleonic medals.
