Napoleon I. First Empire (1804-14). Pewter Uniface Portrait Cliché ND (c.1811) UNC, by Andrieu. 139mm. Of exceptionally elegant production, Napoleon's bold likeness is here rendered in ultra high relief, its gunmetal gray medium imbued with a gleam which adds three dimensions to the Emperor's portrait. This portrait type was designed by Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822) for use on Napoleon II's baptism medal of 1811 (cf. Bramsen 1126) and thus provides a likely date for this uniface's production; Andrieu owned a shop in Paris from which he sold uniface copies of his medals and it is possible that this specimen originated there. Of large size and outstanding visual appeal, this rare piece is sure to garner the attention of Napoleonic collectors.
