Kadamabas of Goa, Anonymous (10-11 Century AD), Gold Gadyana, Obv: majestic roaring lion standing facing left with tail curled on the back and a front leg raised, filleted standard in front, Rev: ornamental trident at the top, Nagari legend "Shri Malaha/ ramari" in two lines, linear and dotted circle around on both sides, 3.6g, 12.72mm, (Mitch. K&A # 243), about extremely fine, Very Rare.
The Kadambas were an ancient ruling family of Karnataka, who had founded the first indigenous Kannadiga kingdom in Banavasi in the 4th Century. That kingdom lasted for some 200 years, but eventually came under the Chalukyas of Badami, becoming their feudatories and then to the Rashtrakutas. Then, in the late 10th century, the Kadambas supported the Chalukyas of Kalyana in their struggle against the Rashtrakutas. After the Rashtrakutas were defeated, it appears the Kalyani Chalukyas gave the Kadambas some measure of independence, one branch in Hangal and another in Goa. The Kadambas ruled Goa from the 10th to the 14th Century, during which they issued a handsome series of gold coins.
