British Commemorative Medals, Hubert Le Sueur (1580-1670), French sculptor, a museum quality bronzed electrotype of an extremely rare portrait medal by Claude Warin, 1635, bust right with lace ruff collar, rev. sun shines on landscape, SVDORE PARTA, 74.5 x 55.5mm (BMC [Jones], 299; TN II, 29, 4), much as made, very fine
The electrotype has the "R" stamp of Robert Ready on the truncation of the bust. Le Sueur came to London in about 1625 (at much the same time as Nicholas Briot), and his bronze equestrian statue of Charles I, London's oldest statue, stands in Trafalgar square. He spent the most productive time of his working career in London and for this reason the medal seems to be a curious omission from Medallic Illustrations, both text and plates. Le Sueur returned to France in 1643. Jones calls the BM specimen of the medal "an aftercast", and lists just two other examples, in Paris and Cambridge. Another electrotype is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery (Given by Sir Lionel Henry Cust, 1893).
