British Commemorative Medals, World War II, Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), silhouetted portrait plaque with bow tie, c. 1945, unsigned, on wooden backing, bust approx. 170 x 115mm, backing 220 x 167mm (Engstrom - ), very fine; Houses of Parliament, octagonal stone ashtray, inset with lead medallion, by F. J. Hanlon for London Stonecraft, Ltd., 1942, the towers of Parliament centred on the Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben, THIS STONE CAME FROM – THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT, whole 125mm, medal 68mm, very fine (2)
The latter made after the bombing of the Palace of Westminster [Parliament], from the stone and lead recovered from the structure damaged by enemy raids, 10th May, 1941. Parliament was damaged by air raids on fourteen different occasions though the incendiary bombs that fell on the nights of 10th and 11th May, 1941, are said to have caused the greatest damage (cf Engstrom 8).
