The French originally occupied Algeria in 1830 and Arzew in 1833, ostensibly to rid the region of the pirates. Louis-Philippe ordered the settlement in 1845, to be open to all Europeans. The medal commemorates the arrival of the first families who were mostly Parisians. It became a fully functional French commune on 31 December 1856. The Albatros was a steam-powered Paddle Frigate, launched in 1844.
