John Leacy (note spelling of surname on service papers) was born in Wigan, Lancashire. In 1858 he attested for General Service in Liverpool on the 22nd May 1880, he stated he had no next of kin and that he was a Labourer. He joined the 69th Brigade at Clonmel on the 29th May 1880 and was given the service number 2621; he was posted to the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish on the 1st July 1881; he served Home 22nd May 1880 to the 5th October 1881, India 6th October 1881 to 15th September 1884, Egypt 16th September 1884 to 8th September 1885 and then Home 9th September 1885 to the 31st May 1886. He then re-enlisted to complete 12 years' service and was discharged from the Home Station on the 21st May 1892. His Service papers state he was in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85 and confirm the award of the "Egyptian with clasp Nile 1884 85", his conduct was very good. Sold with copy of attestation papers and correspondence from Leacey; 647 "The Nile 1884-85" clasps awarded to the Battalion.
