Masonic Jewels, Hobah Lodge, an engraved circular silver Georgian membership jewel or badge, heart on hand within heart, eye above, man's face, with hook nose, to l., 'Hobah – John Turley', rev. in three lines 'For 7 Members', 44.5mm., pierced, very fine, unusual and very rare
Hobah has been defined as meaning 'love; friendship; secrecy', but also as 'a place on the left hand', i.e. 'to the north of Damascus' to which Abraham (Genesis 14:15) pursued the defeated army of Chedorlaomer. It is probably identical with the modern Choba, about 60 miles northwest of Damascus. Oddly, the hand on the jewel is a right hand. There are no 'Hobah' Lodges in the U.K., but the name is associated with two in the USA.
