Xin Mang. 7-23 AD, AE "Yi Dao Ping Wu Qian" Knife Money (33.9 g, 77.8 X 30.9 mm). First two characters inlaid with gold (as made), an advanced casting technique in the first century. Sharp details with the legend 100% readable. Beautiful green and rusty patina on both sides. Rare and popular. Extremely Fine.

A type of knife money that is always confused as a "key". The legend means "a knife money of 5,000 cash". Wang Mang was a powerful politician in late Western Han Dynasty. After murdered Emperor Ping Di, Wang proclaimed himself as regent, then as emperor three years later. This coin was part of Wang Mang's incredibly unsuccessful currency reforming policies. Except for offering later coin collectors some pleasure and confusion, his monetary policies did not bring any positive effects. Wang Mang was killed in a revolt after ruling for 14 years. Estimate Value $7,500 - UP
