Irish Pennies of Edward Iv, Edward V and Richard III from the Collection of Oisin Mac Conamhna

IRISH COINS, Richard III (1483-1485), Suns and Roses coinage, Drogheda, mm. rose (?), sun and rose by crown, rose and sun by neck, rev. large rose in centre, nothing in angles, 0.56g/10h (Burns S-8R; Mac Conamhna, BNJ 2017, p.122, no. 26, this coin; S 6408). Good fine, excessively rare £3,000-3,600

---

Known from just a single pair of dies, this issue came to an abrupt end, as Mac Conamhna points out '...doubtless as a result of Richard's proclamation, within the lifetime of one set of penny dies'. The bust punch is shared with that of Mac Conamhna no. 25 in the name of Edward. Richard's suns and roses issue of Drogheda signalled the final issue of coin from the town
