Edward Charles Cortis, later Stanford (1837-99), Worthing, Sussex; the first medal awarded for chemical products obtained by the destructive distillation of seaweed. A pioneer photographer in his late teens, he was advertising his services in that trade by 1855. Stanford was later a pioneer of the Scottish seaweed industry, based on the island of Tiree, to where he moved in 1864 and worked for the North British Chemical Co. Sold with further background information, incorporating a copied portrait photograph
