Kiangnan. Kuang-hsü 50 Cents CD 1900 AU53 NGC, Nanking mint, KM-Y144a, L&M-232, Kann-82, Wenchao-668. Fully lustrous, with the slightest hint of russet patina. The strike is bold, for this low relief issue, and only light marks are noted. Much of the reverse lettering is noticeably doubled. The actual circulation signs are slight, with only faint rubbing on the high points and the grade on the holder might seem to be a bit conservative. The 50 Cent denomination was very unpopular in the Kiangnan area. Coins were struck only in 1897, 1899, and 1900, with very few produced of all dates and none after this last-year issue. An extremely rare issue, with only a single example certified finer than this near-Mint piece, that being an MS62. The MS62 has never shown up at auction and we assume that it is safely ensconced in a private collection. The last sale we can reference of this seldom-offered issue was the Baldwin's April 2014 Hong Kong Auction, Lot 379, where a PCGS XF45 realized a hammer price of $110,000.
