Valens, 364-378. Solidus (Gold, 21 mm, 4.48 g, 12 h), Antiochia, 373-374. D N VALENS PER F AVG Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valens to right. Rev. GLORIA R-O-MANORVM / KANOBZ Roma, helmeted, seated on throne, holding short scepter in her left hand and shield inscribed VOT / X / MVL / XX together with Constantinopolis, helmeted, seated on throne, holding spear with her left hand and resting her right foot on prow; above shield, Chi-Rho. Depeyrot 41/2 var. (unlisted officina). RIC -, cf. 16d (rosette-diademed and unlisted officina). Extremely rare, an apparently unpublished variety. Several scrapes on the emperor's face and with light traces of mounting, otherwise, good very fine.
