CARIA. Trapezopolis. Gallienus, 253-268. Hexassarion (?) (Orichalcum, 35 mm, 18.63 g, 6 h), Valerius, strategos (?). AY•K•Π•ΛIK•ΓΑΛΛIHNOC Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gallienus to right, seen from behind. Rev. ЄΠI•[..]P•BAΛЄPIOY•TPA/ΠЄZOΠ-ΛЄΙ-TΩN Kybele standing facing between two lions. BMC -. Imhoof-Blumer KM -. Karl -. Leschhorn, Lexicon of Greek Coin Inscriptions -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Glasgow -. SNG Leypold -. SNG München -. SNG Righetti -. SNG von Aulock -. Apparently unpublished and unique, a very interesting issue. Slightly double struck, otherwise, good very fine.

The unexpected emergence of this issue is quite exciting, as the small Carian city of Trapezopolis was not known to have struck any coins after the reign of Septimius Severus. The reverse with Kybele and two lions, however, is attested several times in the 1st and 2nd century, when it was one of the standard types of the city.
