Maximinus I, 235-238. Sestertius (Orichalcum, 31 mm, 21.52 g, 12 h), Rome, 236-238. MAXIMINVS PIVS AVG GERM Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Maximinus I to right, seen from behind. Rev. SALVS AVGVSTI / S C Salus seated left on throne, feeding serpent, rising from altar, out of patera with her right hand. BMC 175 var., Cohen 92 var. and RIC 85 var. (all with differing bust type). Extremely rare with this bust type. Struck on a broad flan and with a bold portrait. Minor spots of red from removing encrustations, otherwise, very fine.
The facing bust of Maximinus shown on this coin is extremely rare: Banti did not know of a single example with this reverse, but he lists a sestertius with the emperor standing between three standards from the Mazzini Collection and several medallions with the same bust type.
