Julius Caesar. Denarius; Julius Caesar; Rome, 44 BC, Denarius, 3.48g. Cr-480/17; Syd-1055; Sear, Imperators-101; C-35 (15 Fr.); same dies as Alföldi pl. CXXII, 112-113. Obv: Wreathed head r., CAESAR before, [I]MPER behind. Rx: Venus standing l. resting l. elbow on shield set on [globe] and holding Victory and transverse scepter, M MET[TIVS] behind, control letter C before, altered from an earlier A and B over A. According to Alföldi (p. 42), the original control letter on this reverse die was A, which was later altered to B and then finally to C. Alföldi, followed by Crawford, dated this issue to immediately after Caesar's assassination on 15 March 44 BC, but Woytek, Arma et Nummi, pp. 421-3, argues persuasively for a dating to the weeks just before Caesar's deathThis coin is a well struck, well centered portrait denarius of Caesar. It does seem to have a small problem; a sizable hole at 5:00. F
