Claudius I. Denarius; Claudius I; 41-54 AD, Lugdunum, 46/7 AD, Denarius, 3.54g. Paris-53, C-46 (25 Fr.), RIC-37 (R3), cf. BM-38 (plated). Obv: TI CLAVD CAESAR AV[G P M TR P VI] IMP XI Head laureate r. Rx: I[MPER] RECEPT across the front wall of the Praetorian camp, which has four ramparts and two gates; behind, two sections of the back wall of the camp, each with a further gate and a further rampart; within the camp, Fides Praetorianorum, the Loyalty of the Praetorians, seated l. in temple, holding scepter, legionary eagle before her. Ex CNG E394, 29 March 2017, lot 454. Rare, only five specimens catalogued by von Kaenel, pp. 74-5. His plates 6-10 do not seem to illustrate either die of our coin. The figure in the temple in this reverse type seems to be not a Praetorian soldier, as usually described, but the personification of the Loyalty of the Praetorians. That lady is implied by the legend, which should be expanded as "Imperator receptus (in fidem Praetorianorum)", "The Emperor received into the loyalty of the Praetorians". For this interpretation see C. Clay's article on the coinage of Nero, Num. Zeitschrift 96, 1982, pp. 42-3.. F
