"The reference is to the triumph celebrated by Germanicus on May 26, A.D. 17, in commemoration of his German victories, during which standards lost by Varus had been recovered" (BMC, p. cxlvii). Caligula, who struck the coin, was a son of Germanicus.This issue frequently comes in worn condition. On a smaller planchet than our second example in the next lot, but with no corrosion anywhere.
