Germanicus. Dupondius; Germanicus; Rome, Struck under Caligula, 37-41 AD, Dupondius, 13.63g. Rev. legend var. of BM-93, Paris-140, C-7 (3 Fr.), and RIC-57. Obv: GERMANICVS / CAESAR Germanicus in quadriga r. Rx: SIGNIS - RECEP / DEVICTIS - GERM / S - C ('He conquered the Germans and won back the lost standards') Germanicus standing l. raising r. arm and holding eagle-tipped scepter in l. The second word in the reverse legend seems to read RECEP rather than the usual RECEPT. "The reference is to the triumph celebrated by Germanicus on May 26, A.D. 17, in commemoration of his German victories, during which standards lost by Varus had been recovered" (BMC, p. cxlvii). Caligula, who struck the coin, was a son of Germanicus.A second beautiful example of this historical issue, struck on a much broader flan than the previous coin and with a tiny bit of porosity behind the quadriga.
