Severus Alexander. AE 20.5, brass, rotation dimples on both sides; Severus Alexander; 222-235 AD, Parium, Mysia, AE 20.5, 5.42g. RPC temp.-3875 (3 spec. all from the same die pair as ours). Obv: IMP CAES L SEP SEV ALEXANDER (the three S's retrograde) Bust laureate, cuirassed r., seen from front, Medusa head on cuirass. Rx: Capricorn l., extending front legs to hold globe, cornucopia above back; below, CGIHP retrograde across field. Instead of his own names M AVR, Alexander is erroneously called L SEP, doubtless because of the following SEV, a name which Alexander had indeed taken over from Septimius. The reverse type was erroneously engraved backwards: the capricorn should be facing right not left, and the legend should read from left to right, not retrograde.. VF
