Attica, Athens. Tetradrachm; Attica, Athens; 449 BC, Tetradrachm, 17.15g. Starr-8, but obv. die fits with Starr's Group VB. Obv: Helmeted head of Athena r. Rx: Owl standing r., head front, to l. olive sprig with two leaves and small crescent, to r. ethnic AT?.Beautiful archaic head of Athena. Beautifully centered with much of the crest of the helmet. This is one of the earliest examples of the regular issues of Athens, but is almost beautifully enough made to fit into the transitional Starr group coins. EF
