Islands off Sicily, Gaulos Æ16. Roman rule, circa 250-200 BC. Helmeted bust of Athena(?) right, within large crescent; V below chin / [ΓΑΥ]ΛΙΤΩΝ, warrior advancing right, brandishing shield and holding spear; star to right. Calciati III, 1; SNG Copenhagen (Africa) 454. 3.34g, 16mm, 6h.

Good Very Fine. Very Rare.

Not differentiated in SNG Copenhagen though both are present in the collection (cf. no.'s 453 & 454), two obverse types are extant for this reverse from Gaulos: one such as the present piece is helmeted and is likely to be Athena or Roma and one with a head that appears unadorned or possibly wearing a diadem, said to be Astarte.
