Caracalla Ӕ28 of Topirus, Thrace. AD 198-217. [AVT K M AVP] ANTΩNINOC, laureate head right, c/m: AMP / OVΛΠIAC TOΠI[POV], tetrastyle temple between two statues of horsemen on bases. Varbanov 2682; Moushmov 4980; For c/m: Howgego 604. 14.61g, 28mm, 7h.

Very Fine. Very Rare.

From the collection of V.B., United Kingdom.

Although seemingly a countermark, the monogram on the obverse of the present piece was in fact engraved on the original die, as is evidenced by the clear raised rim and the exact repetition of both location and design on other examples of the type. It is likely the product of confusion on the part of the provincial die-engraver.
