MACEDON. Cassandrea. Quintus Hortensius Hortalus, proconsul, 43-42 BC. (Bronze, 15.5 mm, 6.12 g, 12 h). HAMMO Horned head of Zeus-Ammon to right. Rev. HORT COL • D Two grain ears. RPC I 1511. S. Kremydi-Sicilianou, "Quintus Hortensius Hortalus in Macedonia (44-42 BC)", Tekmèria 4 (1998/1999), 28-32. Extremely rare, and with a green patina. Very fine.

Although many scholars tend to assign some issues of the series of Quintus Hortensius Hortalus to Dium, the coins were actually minted in the Roman Colony of Cassandrea, one of the oldest Roman colonies in the east. The cult of Zeus Ammon was already well attested in the area even before the Roman conquest.
