CARIA. Antiochia ad Maeandrum. Marcus Aurelius, 161-180. Pentassarion (Bronze, 33 mm, 29.52 g, 5 h), 161-162. ΑVΤ ΚΑΙ Μ ΑVΡ ΑΝΤΩΝЄΙΝ Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcus Aurelius to right. Rev. ΖЄVС ΚΑΠЄΤΩΛΙΟС ΑΝΤΙΟΧЄΩΝ Zeus Kapitolios seated right, holding long scepter, presenting Nike to the Tyche of Antiochia, standing left, holding rudder and cornucopia. RPC IV 9463 (temporary) var. (reverse legend). Extremely rare. Good fine.

This is the third recorded example of this rare type; one is currently in the Munich collection and the other was part of the Lockett collection, sold as lot 2900 at Glendining 21 February 1961. The exact denomination is uncertain: it might be only the equivalent of a sestertius - thus a tetrassarion. The term 'medallion', used by some, is a distinct misnomer and should not be used under any circumstances: all these provincial pieces were actual, high denomination coins.
