Leo IV the Khazar, with Constantine VI, 775-780. Solidus (Gold, 24 mm, 4.40 g, 5 h), Constantinople, 778-780. LЄOҺ VSSЄqqOҺ COҺSτAҺτI O ҺЄOS (last S vertical) Crowned figures of Leo IV, bearded and on the left, and Constantine VI, beardless and on the right, wearing chlamys and seated facing on a lyre-backed throne; between their heads, cross. Rev. LЄOҺ PAP COҺSτAҺτIҺOS PAτHR Crowned equal sized bearded busts of Leo III, on the left, and Constantine V, on the right, facing and wearing loros; between their heads, cross and pellet. DOC 2. SB 1584. A lustrous example struck on a unusual broad flan as a result of re-striking on a solidus of the same dies. Good very fine.
Enough traces of the host coin are still apparent. On the obverse at 2-4h someone can easily notice the exergon line of the undertype, and some details from the feet of Leo the IV and Constantine the VI. From some marks apparent in this point both in the undertype and the overtype we can be sure that they were both struck from the same dies.
