(x) Archbishops of Canterbury, Aethelheard (793-805), Penny, 1.30g, 1h, Eadgar, third issue (c.796-798), without king's name, aedilheard a-r around central circle containing ep, rev. ea dg ·a· ·r·, between limbs of long cross, central circle containing small cross with pellets in angles (Naismith C8d this coin; N.231/1; S.885A), slightly creased, a surface crack on the reverse and a small edge chip 4 and 6 o'clock, otherwise nearly very fine, very rare.

Discussed at length by Derek Chick in Spink Numismatic Circular July 1992, this intermediate issue represents a brief coinage by the Archbishop's moneyer at Canterbury during the insurrection in Kent under Eadberht Praen against the royal house of Mercia. Apart from this coin there are three others listed by Naismith, one of which is no more than a large fragment.
