KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Alexander III – Seleukos I. Circa 324/3-300 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 16.10 g, 9h). Uncertain mint. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; c/m: prow right with dolphin terminal, ΠY above, all within incuse circle / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; control marks not visible. For similar pieces with this c/m type, see M. Thompson, "A Countermarked Hoard from Büyükçekmece" in MN VI (1954). Fair, toned, porous. Very rare with Büyükçekmece type countermark.

Byzantion and Kalchedon applied these prow type countermarks for a limited time in the second half of the third century BC, prior to their striking of autonomous silver. The Propontis Hoard also contained two examples with this countermark type.
