Hiberno-Norse Vikings of York. Early Period. 919-925. AR penny. 1.1 gm. 20 mm. St. Peter sword type. The sword of St. Peter, hilt to the left, a trefoil of pellets at the tip of the sword; SC-PE TRIIIO above and below; the I in TRIMO is an inverted voided mallet / Central cross in a circle, a pellet in each angle; +ERORACEI with an annulet between each letter. S. 1014. N. 555. Cf Blackburn II, p 38. From the catalog: "Some die clogging on obverse around legend with a few light scratches, all essential devices mostly clear and a full piece, good very fine/nearly extremely fine." (The scratches, just above the SC, are very slight and require magnification and the right angle under a light for visibility.) Very Rare.

Ex Eboracum "Ryedale" Hoard. (Spink 228, March 2015: $7000 all in).

This type is much scarcer than the variety with the hammer of Thor on the reverse. Eight examples in varying condition of this type were in the hoard. This is one of the better examples. (AD note: Before the hoard I had not seen this type offered even though I was very involved with coins of the Vikings in England including working with two very serious collectors of the series.)
