Able Seaman Robert Donochie (AKA Conochie); Emb.08Aug1900 on SS Salamis; invalided to Australia 01Dec1900 on SS Changsha.
Robert Donochie was discharged at Hong Kong. He, along with 2 other NSW members and 3 Victorians, all of the Naval Contingent to China, arrived at Sydney on Saturday 17 March 1901 aboard the SS Changsha from Hong Kong. One of the Victorians, Seaman J.Sylvester, had been imprisoned in Hong Kong Goal, stripped of his uniform, put in convict's striped clothes and herded with the murderers and felons of Hong Kong, mostly as disciplinary punishment for disrespecting officers. He made this sensational complaint to The Age newspaper regarding his ill treatment and stated that he intended to call for a Royal Commission to bring forth the truth on the inhumane treatment meted out to the men. He said that Robert Donochie had also been imprisoned.
