ISM: 5th Supplement to LG 16/10/1945, p5130. Coronation Medal 1937 entitlement confirmed. Thomas James Huckins, police constable, age 26, born at Oxfordshire, England; Enl.24Aug1915 at Sydney, NSW; Emb.19Oct1914; fined 14 days pay for disobedience of orders having a Turkish rifle in his possession and giving wrong name to police; VD hospital in UK 29Jan-25Feb1916; to A/Cpl 16Jan1917; to Cpl 14Nov1917; RTA 19Feb1919; Disch.24Apr1919.
Tom Huckins was promoted to Constable 1st Class on 1 April 1923 and to Sergeant 2nd Class in October 1937. In 1938 the North Narrabeen Surf Club decided to show their appreciation to the local area police sergeant, Tom Huckins, for his outstanding support over the years and so had made a bronze statue of a surfer standing by a reel and on the marble base was inscribed, 'To Sergeant T.Huckins as a mark of esteem and appreciation from the North Narrabeen Surf Club.' Sergeant Huckins thanked members but declined the presentation because, as a police officer, he could not accept gifts.
The statuette was placed back in its box but in February 1945, shortly after Sergeant Huckins retired, the club invited him along and presented the statuette again and it was graciously accepted.
