Alexander Warren Macdonald (this is the format of his name when he signs his name, Macdonald not MacDonald), accountant, age 26, born at Sydney, NSW; Enl.14Aug1915 at Holdsworthy, NSW, with previous service of 8 years with Cadets at Neutral Bay, Sydney and 18 months as officer in Militia; Emb.02May1916; to 2Lt 12Aug1916; to France 21Nov1916; to Lt 11Feb1917; to 63Bn 29May1917; to 34Bn 15Sep1917; to Capt 11Jan1918; KIA 30Aug1918; In a report by the Adjutant for CO of 34Bn it states 'Captain MacDonald (sic, see note above) was killed near Road Wood when shot by a machine gun burst whilst standing in the trench. He was buried by the Pioneers of Battalion almost where he fell. The Padre of this unit officially buried him subsequently.' The grave was marked by a durable wooden cross with his name and regimental details and later his body was exhumed and buried in Peronne Communal Extension Cemetery, France.
