SICILY. Syracuse. Hieron II (275-215 BC). AV decadrachm or hemistater (15mm, 4.28 gm, 2h). NGC MS 5/5 - 2/5, Fine Style, smoothing, test cut. Struck by Hieron as King, ca. 217-215 BC. Head of Persephone left, wreathed in grain ears; lit torch behind / IEPΩNOΣ, charioteer driving fast biga left, reins in left hand, kentron in right; Π below. BMC -. SNG Lloyd 1539. Amazingly detailed fine style and lustrous surfaces. The light smoothing appearing on the cheek of Persephone has been executed expertly so as to not be distracting.
