China Banque de l'Indo-Chine 5 Dollars = 5 Piastres 15.1.1902 Pick S440As Specimen. A King of Banque de l'Indo-Chine issues. The red design featuring Neptune was shared on many other issues of the French interest bank operating in her colonies, but this example was intended to be issued in the bustling port of Shanghai. The Shanghai branch was among the earliest to be established, and continued operations after Liberation in 1949. However, like issues for other Chinese cities, only one series was released. The bank still heavily tied with the Government of France could simply not compete with British interest banks which operated in the same area. As French colonial expansion moved south, the bank decided to limit the issuance of banknotes from its Chinese offices. Only Specimens are known for this denomination. This example preserves all features and fine details, allowing the collector to fully enjoy the French designs as the artist intended. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
