Costa Rica Banco Internacional 2 Colones ND (1931-36) Pick 167cts Color Trial Specimen. Arguably the most famous design from Costa Rica. Mona Lisa is featured on this always attractive example, with a view of an ox cart on the back. Waterlow and Sons only used this portrait once on any issued note, as customers often thought it was too recognizable. However, officials at the Banco Internacional, then the de facto national bank at the time, thought the opposite and wanted a renowned portrait on their notes, which previously featured allegories from the American Bank Note Company's archives. This example's Color Trial Specimen status must also be noted. Though the underprint remains the same, the intaglio features on the face is black instead of the issued dark brown. However, the back design is executed in green, a striking difference from the black which was eventually used on the issued version. An excellent and well preserved example from an earlier stage of banknote design, with all features preserved as well as the day as it was printed. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 Net, previous mounting in the right back margin. HID08701242017

Estimate: 4000-6000 USD
