India Reserve Bank of India 1000 Rupees 5.11.1998 Pick Unlisted Giesecke and Devrient Lead Test Note. A second example of this Giesecke and Devrient trial that we have offered. The design is dated to 1998, which is two years before the first issuance of the actual 1000 Rupee note. This note is executed in a different color from the red issued note, but uses the same layout with some minor design changes around the frames. The existence of the LEAD holographic strip in the right side also suggests this note was probably printed to sell the Giesecke and Devrient technology. As India has its own banknote printing works, it is unlikely this test note was printed to acquire the entire printing contract. However, this note was also dated to 1998, during which the Government of India imported 3.6 billion banknotes from various printers around the world to fill the gap between demand and locally produced notes. Though the printing contract to G+D was only for Rs. 500 notes, the existence of this note gives credence to the hypothesis that the printing company either acquired or designed plates for this higher denomination, in order to sell its paper and anti-counterfeiting technologies as well. This note is probably unique, and exhibited only to the highest ranking officials in the Reserve Bank and Note Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India. A must for any collector of Indian notes, with its lofty grade and ladder serial number. PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ. HID08701242017

Estimate: 7000-9000 USD
