Japan Bank of Japan 200 Yen ND (1927) Pick 37Bs Specimen. Unlike the ornately designed contemporary notes of Japan, this austere design was introduced as a response to bank runs, price depression, and financial instability arising from the Showa Financial Crisis of 1927, and subsequent shocks of 1930-31. These notes were prepared in order to attempt to shore up banks from any possible runs, as a part of Finance Minister Takahashi Korekiyo's (who was later featured on the 50 Yen note) plan to cushion large shocks to the economy. Eventually, only a few notes of this design were issued (all with block 1), most likely due to infighting within the government and ministry in regards to re-inflating the economy through printing banknotes. As a result, these Specimens with placeholders for block numbers are often the only available examples of this uniface design. This is the finest example we have featured, and the sole finest graded of this type in the PMG Census. The last example we have offered of this type was an About Uncirculated 50 EPQ note from the Dr. Norman Jacobs Collection in 2011, which realized $19,550. This only Gem example from another storied collection is expected to far surpass this previous record. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. From the Feeling Good Collection HID08701242017

Estimate: 30000-50000 USD
