GALBA, A.D. 68-69. AE Sestertius (34.21 gms), Rome Mint, ca. December A.D. 68.
RIC-469; ACG-371 (A123, P189). "SER SVLPI GALBA IMP CAESAR AVG TR P" Laureate head of Galba facing right; Reverse: "HISPANIA CLVNIA SVL" Galba, bare-headed, and in military dress, seated facing left on curule chair, left hand holding parazonium, right hand extended to draped female figure (likely Hispania) who stands at left facing right, right hand extending palladium, left hand holding cornucopiae, "S C" in exergue. EXTREMELY RARE. Fields smoothed. Good strike details with fine style dies displaying a nice high relief portrait. Nicely centered with attractive dark patina. A tremendous level of quality with an historically significant reverse design.

The first emperor of the "Year of the Four Emperors", Servius Sulpicius Galba enjoyed an upbringing in a wealthy family and a capable career as a military officer. Some time after his retirement he was granted the governorship of Hispania Tarraconensis. Following Nero's suicide, he was declared Emperor and marched on Rome. After establishing himself in Rome, he commissioned this commemorative type referencing his Spanish power base. NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Fine Style, Smoothing.
