BELGIUM. Tournai. 2 Souverain d'Or, 1617. Albert & Isabella of Spain (1598-1621). NGC MS-64.
Fr-391 (Belgium); KM-23.2; Delm-439. Obverse: Austrian Archduke and his Spanish consort enthroned facing, legend: "ALBERTVS. ET. ELISABET. DEI. GRATIA. ARCHIDVCES." Reverse: Crowned Arms of the Spanish dominions in Collar of the Golden Fleece, titles Dukes of Burgundy, Lords of Tournai. This royal couple were virtually independent rulers who did much to win over alienated subjects of the Spanish crown. Had they been able to establish a functioning dynasty, European history might have taken a vastly different direction. Among the very finest seen of this imposing gold issue with bold orange-gold color, a firm strike that displays minimal doubling and little evidence of previous handling over either side. Highly desirable as an elite type coin and presently the single finest graded of the issue at NGC or PCGS.

NGC MS-64.

Estimate: $15000.00- $20000.00
