BELGIUM. 100 Franc, 1853. PCGS PROOF-61 Secure Holder.
Fr-409; Bruce-3.1; Dup-538; LA-BHM-2.3; Bogaert-535; Eeckhout-NBBM-3. RARE. Second Finest graded at PCGS with only one finer (PR62 CAMEO). From a mintage of only 482 pieces. Dash between "21" and "22". Struck to commemorate the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Brabant. The marriage between Leopold II of Belgium and Marie Henriette of Austria was an arrangement to strengthen the Belgian Monarchy. Marie Henriette was an accomplished artist, musician and a passionate equestrian. The Princess Pauline Clementine Marie Walburga von Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein once wrote that their marriage was "between a stable-boy and a nun, and by nun I mean the Duke of Brabant", as Duke Leopold was shy and withdrawn. Like many arranged marriages it was not a happy one. After the death of their only son their relationship became strained, but they gave one last attempt which resulted in the birth of their last daughter Clementine. They would later separate and live their own lives with Marie Henriette moving to Spa in 1895 where she would live out the remainder of her life. Leopold on the other would take many mistresses and in 1899 he married a 16 year French prostitute Caroline Lacroix five days before he died. Unfortunately they were unable to consummate their nuptials and their marriage was considered illegitimate under Belgian law. Reflective fields and frosted devices. Fields show some handling mark as expected, but nothing overly distracting. Medium golden toning. PCGS PROOF-61 Secure Holder.

Estimate: $10000.00- $15000.00
