FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1773-A/X. Paris Mint. Louis XV (1715-74). PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder.
Fr-467; KM-556.1; Gad-342; Dupl-1646. An above average example of the SCARCE "louis d'or a la vieille tete" type, showcasing full highpoint detail and strong luster that delivers exceptional eye appeal. Somewhat of an enigma, this coin possesses a clear over-mintmark, the "A" for Paris clearly having been stamped over an "X" for Amiens. Considering that the last known Louis d'Or from Amiens was dated 1757 and the mint closed entirely in 1770, it seems logical then that the reverse die that was used to strike this example was borrowed from the earlier "louis d'or bandeau" issue. As such, an interesting and EXTREMELY RARE variety of the date, this being the lone example certified and the only example we've seen.
PCGS MS-62 Secure Holder.
