FRANCE. 5 Franc Essai, 1815-A. Paris Mint. PCGS SP-64 RB Secure Holder.
cf.KM-Pn27; Maz-744b. Obverse: Crowned and mantled bust of Louis XVIII; Reverse: Crowned arms of France divide the denomination, wreath around, date and mintmark below. This Essai by Tiolier was struck in silver (Maz-744), gold-plated bronze (Maz-744a), bronze (shown here) and tin (Maz-744c). This design was not adopted but Tiolier's bare bust of the king was used on the silver coinage dated 1816-24. We see no offerings of this pattern in Coin Archives, only a silver one in a Maison Palombo sale (December 2014, lot 372). Given this coin's handsome appearance, with its strong prooflike qualities, attractive iridescent blue and purple tone in the fields and considerable mint red in the protected areas, we can only expect strong competition to acquire this stunning pattern issue.

PCGS SP-64 RB Secure Holder.

Estimate: $1500.00- $2000.00
