FRANCE. 5 Franc, 1861-A. Paris Mint. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder.
Gad-739; KM-799.1; VG-3753. From a mintage of 22,000 pieces. Scarcer large "A" mintmark. The first date of this Napoleon III "Laureate Head" type and the first in a succession of six dates (through 1866) where the mintages were all tiny when compared to the later dates (1867-1870) that saw output drastically balloon into the millions. Notably superb, this example certainly belongs alongside the top handful that have survived, with full detail within the designs and radiant surrounding luster that enlivens the fields. Few marks appear over the surfaces as well and dappled olive tone that clings to portions of the raised surfaces helps to assure absolute originality. An unquestionably elite example of the date that deserves placement in a French cabinet of uncommon refinement. PCGS MS-64 Secure Holder.
Estimate: $4000.00- $6000.00
