GREAT BRITAIN. Newark Besieged. 1/2 Crown, 1646. Charles I (1625-49). PCGS AU-50 Secure Holder.
S-3140a; KM-371. Impressively centered and well struck on a lozenge shaped flan with charming gray brown color over both sides and visible remnants of original luster situated around the lighter toned central design elements. A truly incredible relic from this historically interesting and turbulent civil war period that ultimately saw the royalist forces concede tightly held Newark on May 6, 1646, the day after King Charles I had fled the fortress in secret to surrender himself personally to the besieging Scots. VERY RARE quality for the issue and presently the top graded piece at PCGS and NGC.
PCGS AU-50 Secure Holder.
From the John Whitney Walter Collection.
Ex: Stack's auction December 2-4, 1997.
