GREAT BRITAIN. Newark Besieged. Shilling, 1646. Charles I (1625-49). PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder.
S-3143; KM-370.2; North-2640. 5.82 g. Very attractive quality with superb old gray tone, a strike that is sharp, displaying traces of some strike doubling on the obverse, and fields that hold almost no evidence of post strike handling. Historically important as an issue, struck by the royalist forces who surrendered Newark on May 6, 1646, the day after King Charles I had fled the fortress in secret to surrender himself personally to the besieging Scots. RARE in this quality and among the finest seen. PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder.

From the John Whitney Walter Collection.

Ex: Stack's auction December 9-10, 1992.

Estimate: $3000.00- $5000.00
