GREAT BRITAIN. Thirteen Piece Matte Proof Set, 1902. PCGS PROOF-60 to PROOF-64. All Secure Holders.
S-PS9; Fr-398a-401a; KM-PS15. 5 Pounds (PCGS PR-63+), 2 Pounds (PCGS PR-64), Sovereign (PCGS PR-61), 1/2 Sovereign (PCGS PR-60), Crown (PCGS PR-64), 1/2 Crown (PCGS PR-64), Florin (PCGS PR-62), Shilling (PCGS PR-64), 6 Pence (PCGS PR-63), Maundy 4 Pence (PCGS PR-64), Maundy 3 Pence (PCGS PR-64), Maundy 2 Pence (PCGS PR-63), and Maundy Pence (PCGS PR-64). The set includes a red leather case with "SPECIMEN COINS 1902" inscribed around a crown. The silver issues exhibit a variety of toning hues, from a light silvery gray mix to a somber dark gray, and a few have splashes of aqua or lavender. Only the Maundy 4 and 2 Pence show minor blackish toning spots. The gold issues exhibit the muted luster typical of matte proofs. The best of the four, the 5 Pounds, exhibits beautiful soft surfaces and dark honey golden toning, closely followed by the 2 Pounds. The remaining Sovereign and 1/2 Sovereign, though lower grades, do not show distracting marks on fields or devices that are visible without magnification. PCGS PROOF-60, 61, 62, 63 (2), 63+, & 64 (7). All Secure Holders.
