GREAT BRITAIN. Dutch Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598-1653), Death at the Battle of Scheveningen Medal, 1653. Commonwealth (1649-60). PCGS Genuine--Repaired, Unc Details Secure Holder.
54 mm. Van Loon II-364; MI-404/36; MH-544. Struck in silver. By Deric van Rijswijck. Bust of Tromp 1/4 right, wearing his Order of Saint-Michel. Inscription: "EQUES ET THALASSIAA HOLLANDIAE XXANS MARTINUS HERPERTI TROMPIUS" around, and "AET LV" in right field; Reverse: view of naval battle with burning ship sinking in the right foreground. "VICTOR HOSTIUM FORTITER PRO PATRIA PUGNANS OCCUBUIT JO ANO. DOM CLCLCCLIII" around legend. Chased fields on both sides. This feature is no doubt what PCGS is referring to in its "Repaired" designation - however the fields were smoothed at time of issue to remove imperfections and make the medals more appealing to the recipients and elite purchasers of these pieces, and can hardly be regarded as repairs or damage. Many of these medals were made with a suspension loop at the top, and it is possible this example at one time was looped - but that cannot be ascertained because the edge cannot be seen in the holder. Despite the noted defect lovely old cabinet tone. Clearly an example which sat for a prolonged period of time undisturbed. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, Unc Details Secure Holder.

From the John Whitney Walter Collection.
