GREAT BRITAIN. Death of Dutch Admiral Martin Tromp Medal, 1653. Commonwealth (1649-60). PCGS Genuine--Repaired, Unc Details Secure Holder.
75 mm. Eimer-186a; van Loon II-364. Silver. Obverse with a bust of the Admiral, almost facing, with 2 jenii above and a ribbon inscribed: "MYN HERT EN HANDT WAS VOOR HET LANDT" below. The reverse features a naval engagement with a sinking British ship in the foreground. Around the scene is a running script inscription: "WAAROM DOET W. MULLER TROMP DOOR KUNST VAN GOUT EN SILVER LEEVEN. OM DAT HY DYSER EEW DOOR KRYGSDEUGD HEEFT VERDREVEN. OBYT DEN 10 AUG. 1653." The detail and relief of this large medal was made possible because it was produced from two separate cast silver plates, one for each side, which were then permanently joined together. The obverse fields show evidence of fine chasing around the portrait, done to smooth the fields, which is also detectable on the reverse. This is, no doubt, the defect PCGS refers to in calling the medal "Repaired". Actually, the chasing process was done at the time the medals were produced and was regarded as an enhancement to the appearance of the medal - not as a defect - and is typical to this and many other large cast medals of the period. Lovely deep tone with attractive multi-color hues that pop out when tilted in the light. Clearly an example which sat for a prolonged period of time undisturbed. PCGS Genuine--Repaired, Unc Details Secure Holder.

From the John Whitney Walter Collection.
